KYLE, Barbara (1913-1966)
Paddington 1929; Fulham 1935; Islington; CL Royal Institute of International Affairs 1945; Aslib 1962-1965
She replanned and reorganized the RIIA library to the extent that it became one of the main collections in its field. After some years' research and a brief period as Assistant Director of the NBL, in parallel with 20 years' service on the Aslib Council, she joined the staff as Research Librarian and Editor of the Journal of Documentation; the December 1965 issue is her Festschrift. Her own voluminous writing, under her own name and also as Ruth Archibald, was mostly in periodicals; her Teach yourself librarianship (1964) may be regarded as an introduction for possible entrants. She became in particular an international authority on classification with special reference to the social sciences.
